SEASON 26 | EPISODE 4

“BMW sleeved their very latest generation liquid cooled opposed twin into their classic sport touring RT package and then updated it with cutting edge riding tools such as optional dynamic riding modes in the engine department, shift assist in the transmission box and dynamic ESA on both ends of the suspension bits, then you just know that this would be a very potent touring package. And that’s just for starters. There’s also an electric wind screen, ABS, traction control, heated grips, blue tooth… the list goes on.”

“As far as 2-cylinder fans are concerned, first-class touring has a memorable abbreviation – and it’s been around for 30 years: RT. For long-haul travellers there can hardly be any other term which has always stood for perfectly conceived motorcycling concept from start to finish.” – BMW Motorrad

BMW’s R 1200 RT is one of the most comprehensive touring packages we’ve seen yet from BMW. When it comes to adventure touring, BMW Motorrad knows a thing or two about travelling on two wheels over really long distances in a variety of conditions. The company also knows a thing or two about horizontally opposed twin cylinder boxer engines. So when BMW sleeved their very latest generation liquid cooled opposed twin into their classic sport touring RT package and then updated it with cutting edge riding tools such as optional dynamic riding modes in the engine department, shift assist in the transmission box and dynamic ESA on both ends of the suspension bits, then you just know that this would be a very potent touring package. However, before you even get to the engine, you’ll notice all of the refinements designed to enhance the touring experience. It has an electric windscreen, ABS, traction control, heated grips, and blue tooth, to list a few.

Dave turned to enduro and dirt rider Kevin Burnett to see what a seasoned off-roader thought of this deluxe on-road package. Kevin was impressed with the liquid cooled horizontal twin calling it ‘athletic’ compared to BMW’s older airhead engine. It’s also doesn’t tend to lose power when the revs get up offering a smooth and quiet ride. The brakes are impressive and the suspension is versatile giving the R1200RT a smooth ride in almost any scenario. And a dial adjacent on the handgrips controls it all so you can adjust your ride without compromising control.
